Site Status

It’s been months since I made my last post on my own website. Thanks again to MotsuCQ  for keeping things running while I was away.

I’m not sure if there are any readers who still check this blog, but it’s been down for the past few weeks because we moved our server, and the webmaster didn’t back up anything… As a result, we’re missing pretty much all the images with exception of external image links. I do have most of the images saved on my PC, so they should restored soon, when I have time.

There may be some plugins missing as well, so please make a post here and let me know if you see any dead links or bugs!

What I’ve Been Up To

I guess I burned out. This section’s going to be pretty long, so go ahead and skip if you don’t care.

It’s true that I moved and work kept me busy, but there was always free time. I had a choice of relax-and-play-Diablo-3 or fansub when I got home… and I simply didn’t have the energy or motivation for more translation after a long day. I’ve always been somewhat of a procrastinator, and “work” piling up just made it harder and harder to catch up. At the same time, I was hooked on D3.

I did miss watching and translating anime. A few months back, I tried to quit D3 by selling all the gear I had (repetitive farming was getting boring anyway), but I couldn’t bring myself to get back into the fansubbing game. Eventually, I started playing D3 again in Hardcore Mode, where you lose your character and gear upon a single death. Being masochist that I am (?), I got hooked again for another few months and played enough to rank #1 DPS in Hardcore Mode.

A whole bunch of disconnect or lag deaths later, it finally dawned to me that I was spending way too much time on that game and it would just be rinse and repeat of levelling up and disconnecting (damn you, Canadian internet!). I simply stopped playing and haven’t touched the game for almost 2 weeks. I quit D3.

It’s pretty absurd how much time I actually spent on that game now that I look back on it, but I guess that was just a chapter of my life. I don’t think my time was wasted because well, it was fun, and the sale of items from that game is what’s paying for hosting of this blog right now (and will continue to, for a long time).

Fansubbing and Near-Term Plans

I reduced my backlogs a bit in the past two weeks, and a replacement TL was found for another project I was stalling on.

There should be a major release tomorrow or the day after.
I have another ancient project that’s about 75% complete. Although I honestly doubt many of you will care about this one, it’s very important to me, so I will try to finish it before moving ahead.

I am currently considering a few options for the winter season. It’s still way too early to say anything about it right now (and to be honest, I don’t know if I’m capable of fansubbing another series since I have to like, work and make a living).

For those wondering where Madoka and Nise BD rips are… every episode of Madoka was TLCed over 8 months ago, and Nise is about half-way TLCed, so you’re looking for answer in the wrong place.

As for the future direction of this blog, I’m not all that certain myself.

Most likely, I will continue use it to release new solo projects that interest me. Fansub review for the winter season is a real possibility. However, I don’t think I’ll be making episodic TL notes again due to time constraints, but anything can happen :)

Thanks for reading through this rant, and I’ll try to communicate more with the readers here if I were to take a break from fansubbing activities again in the future.

  1. Awesome to see that you’re back! I missed you haha. Only problem I had with your disappearance is the fact that we got nothing, not even a quick update. But I guess you had your own reasons. I always believed you’d come back eventually :P

Good to hear about the major release! With your extra work load, I’m guessing your fansub comparisons wont be continuing?

  2. Whohoo!, etc.

  3. I’m pretty sure the fansub reviews is what brought most people to your blog. Would really love to see you pick that project back up again.

    • It’s what brought me here, and I’d really love to see you bring that back. Had to fly blind for two seasons. :(

Anyways, welcome back! I hope you stay, your TL & reviews are greatly appreciated!

  4. I try to forget those times when I played games like that. It feels like I wasted months of my life doing the same things over and over again.

I don’t play games like Diablo III nowadays. It’s just not worth it.

  5. Good to hear that you’re alive.

And yes, it’s not surprising to hear that you burned out on fansubbing and related activities. As a fellow person who once fansubbed until his lack of a work ethic took over, my advice is to try to avoid loading up on any altruistic venture to the point that it becomes work. If you let a hobby turn into work, burnout is just a matter of time unless you can keep up a steady level of personal reward (intrinsic or extrinsic).

Either way, good luck on your future ventures (and hopefully more blogging).

  6. if you’re doing the reviews again (I hope so), maybe you should make them shorter and not so in depth. like just a general comment about how many mistakes you found or something like that. this way you save much time for you.

    • I would like to second this suggestion for the sake of your sanity! While I did enjoy the detail, it must take a good chunk of time/energy to do that constantly. A per-show general overview would be more than generous enough.

      (And welcome back!)

  7. I’m so happy that all your TL notes are back (and that you’re all good lol). I hope you’ll be able to restore the images as well. Thanks a lot!!

  8. I’m glad to see you are back.
Just don’t get addicted on D3 again please!

  9. I consider this blog to be part of my fansubbing activity, and it takes a lot of time to write posts too. I had to quit Starcraft BW when I started fansubbing too. I take these hobbies seriously and I prefer to not do them at all if I can’t invest considerable time to “get really good” at them.

Thanks everyone for your comments and input.

  13. Good thing you remembered my email so we could get the ball rolling again ;) . I’m happy to help, as this site was a great resource for many including myself. Let me know if you need anything else, be it recovering files or configuring WordPress.

  25. Good to see you’re back :)

A winter fansub review, even a short one giving your general impression, would be awesome.

  26. Oh, don’t worry, you’ll come back once the next major patch hits.

  27. Welcome back man!

It’s nice that you could finally come back after so many months playing D3. I agree with you on the fact that it wasn’t wasted time, and I’ve done the same thing with other videogames so I can relate to that. Hope to see some new anime reviews soon, but for now, just welcome back. :)

Now, if only Dark_Sage could come back again… 8thSin, haven’t you heard anything about him or his whereabouts?

  28. Welcome back!
Glad to see that the site is still up, I’m sure the TL notes will be useful both to those who haven’t watched the shows yet and to those fans (like myself) who love to argue endlessly on the net about their favorite shows years after they’ve aired. Well, at least Penguindrum is still airing in my country ;)

By the way, it looks like most of the screencaps of the TL notes for the few last episodes of MPD are still missing – do you still have those around? If not, I can help retaking them. Shouldn’t be too hard as the timestamp is part of the filename, at least for the few I’ve checked.

  29. Yeah, only the post I wrote while the website was hosted at wordpress.com still remains.

The rest still need to be uploaded.

I do have most screenshots saved on my laptop. I just have to figure out a way to upload them in proper folders.

Thanks for the offer. I just haven’t gotten around to it, but we’ll try to get it up soon.

It’s nice to see this site up again I really enjoyed it.

  32. You don’t have to write anything, just watch anime for entertainment in your spare time, and then give a letter grade, number grade or whatever afterwards on the translation, most of us just wants to know who has the more accurate translation. Just a single number or letter will satisfy.

    Posted by alex | November 9, 2012, 9:24 am
    • I don’t really want to just go out there and give a grade because it would just lead to pointless drama and complaints.

I would probably focus on fewer titles that interests me if I decide to review again.

      Posted by 8thSin | November 10, 2012, 11:46 pm
  33. Nice, finally you’re back! I still didn’t download any Madoka BD, because I wanted to wait for your version. <3 <3
I still don't get the appeal of hack and slash games…

  34. Whahaha! 8thSin! Email me!!

    Posted by pokute | January 23, 2013, 2:09 pm
    • Hey pokute, it’s been such a long time!

Good to see you’re still around :)

      Posted by 8thSin | February 12, 2013, 5:59 pm
      • Wish I could say I was doing fansubbing, but I get really stressed as soon as I sit down to do it. And when I look at the stuff I did with you and others, sometimes I get seriously embarrassed. I did a full subtitle for Rainy Dog and then lost the file. Not a lot of dialog, but took a lot of care to keep the “atmosphere”.

It’s easier to code than to fansub.

If you ever feel like doing something wacky, like an old Yakuza flick, I’d be up for it. I’ve got the lingo down pretty well. I’d love to do Gate of Flesh!

  35. So… you doing anything this season?
