Mawaru Penguindrum Ep24 [END] – Observations

The long journey has finally come to an end… or is it just the beginning?

My thoughts exactly when I first saw this episode.

This ending is pretty much up to your interpretation, so I can’t really offer much explanation to what happened this week. I’ll just note random things I noticed in this episode and make my own guesses. The final episode sure leaves a lot to our imagination, so IMAAAAAGIIINE!

Mawaru Penguindrum Ep23 – TL Notes, Observations

We’re back to the old WordPress theme thanks to help from MotsuCQ!

It seems like the End Card got cutoff from our release…

“I activated it at the destination of fate,” I can only imagine this is the Penguindrum…

Ima, Ai Ni Yukimasu (“Coming to See You” AKA “Be With You”) happens to be my favorite Japanese romance movie of all time. The similarity of phrasing here leads me to believe it’s a reference here as well. In the movie, the heroine died from an unknown illness and gets resurrected in the future. The heroine’s life expired in the end and disappears, much like Himari did in this episode. The time she spent with the protagonist and leaving behind a (normal) diary helps the protagonist move on with his life in the movie though.

Some mysteries solved, and I feel there’s a lot of story development in this episode.

Ayamein this week’s opening the scene where we have the shadow of penguinhatter and a man ‘dancing’ gets some vines behind it. reminded me of utena and of the tree of life… what’s up with this symbolism?

Very well-thought-out, tightly written script, directed nicely in this week’s episode.

As some of you may have noticed, some Brazilian group got access to our half-edited script and leaked it this week… Well, it’s all good because I stole their timing and pasted the updated script over lol. Thx Morningspeed. Our timer was enjoying his thanksgiving so everything worked out :)

Mawaru Penguindrum Ep19 – TL Notes, Observations

This episode is heavily themed around “Family” and “Truth”.

They got me good. I was totally fooled by Kanba’s reaction in the last episode if the beginning of this episode can be trusted. Apparently, he really was bluffing. This secret was big enough to risk Himari’s life.

So, it’s finally that I’ve been waiting for. Tabuki episode.

It’s been quite a while since I saw the painting, but it’s unmistakable. A direct reference to Claude Monet’s Study of a Figure Outdoors (Facing Right). It seems like those art history classes in university weren’t complete waste of money :)

The second novel was released last week. I don’t intend to ever be ahead at the time of writing episodic posts, so all speculations made will remain spoiler-free.

I want to focus a bit on the presentation first. The composition in these scenes are absolutely remarkable.

Natsume on the spotlight. It was a very difficult episode to translate with seemingly endless puns and jokes, but I really enjoyed the episode, and I was pleased with what we came up with.

Natsume’s signature phrase: “Gosh, I must crush him soon” was apparently derived from her childhood when she was thinking of killing her own grandfather. It is still odd though, that the term 「すり潰す」 (“grind/mash into pieces/flat”) was used even by her grandfather.

Mawaru Penguindrum 15 – TL Notes, Observations

Some of you may have already read the post from gg about my car accident on the way home from NYAF. The accident occurred on a rainy highway where I was driving at 120km/h (this is actually slowed down due to rain, because we usually drive at 130~140km/h in Toronto. Still pretty stupid though). My car is no longer drivable nor worth repairing, and I got it scrapped yesterday. Fortunately, I walked away from it with just a scratch on my left palm and minor sore in my wrist. Although I do like a lot of shows that deal with fate and what not, I wasn’t much of a believer in supreme beings and superstitions. I can’t help but to think someone was looking out for me and kept me alive though (or maybe the whole thing was a warning). Most of you may not believe this, but I also found out later that my car was purchased from the dealer exactly 12 years ago, on the same day I crashed it. Perhaps my car’s lifespan just expired in some freaky twist of fate. In any case, the experience gave me a new appreciation for life. And of course, Mawaru Penguindrum, a show that (probably lol) deals with resisting fate.
