Protagonists usually get the girl in the final episode. Not in our Accel World!
Threesome with two hot girls!
He’s going “NOOOOO!!!”
and I’m going “Whaaa???”
Come on, at least have some fun in your dream.
Also, panchira in the second scene. There’s only 3 frames of it, because this show has the taste.

I think she’s jealous. This is not a very clear indicator and she’s definitely not being tsundere.
Nope, not at all.
Google Goggles for human beings. I could really use this because I forget people’s names a lot.
Even in the future, they like to run a gossip magazine. They’re actually less interested in it when they find out the rumor may be true.
Good work, girls.

This is some serious negative thinking going on, but Haru is kind of stuck in his inferiority complex. I guess for a fat midget who suffered bullying all his life, but it may be a normal reaction when the perfect girl suddenly shows interest in you.
I like how this scene almost looks like a couple having a fight. Although, it’s just Haruyuki’s inferiority complex showing up in the conversation. He’s really dense, but I guess that’s part of being in an anime.
Snow Black has been depicted as Miss Perfect for quite some time. Here, we see she’s still human, and Haru probably hits the one thing that really bothered her. Perhaps, being too “perfect” made her hard to approach and she never had real friends etc.
Just a random observation… “WcDonald” is a really common variation used to avoid copyright laws lol
Also, I find it hard to believe two of the best gamers took so long to react, while random guy A and B to their sides already reacted and running away… Sigh.
I really need this feature… those who have been following this blog long enough probably knows why lol
This is very convenient, but it makes sense that such a useful power should be only available to high level players. Also, I think if she had at least 5,000 points or something accumulated, she could probably survive one loss after using the skill, but since she went on two years without connecting to the globalnet, the odds of her having that many points are low.
I have to say, this development went way too fast for my tastes. However, I think since the real and virtual world is somewhat blurred in this world, love at first sight when she saw Porky in tennis action is somewhat plausible.
I don’t know how we’ll survive with Snow Black.
We better get some serious Chiyu fanservice next week, because there wasn’t enough material for an Accel World hentai sequel this week either.
I absolutely love the music in this scene. It’s sounds like a race scene in Chrono Trigger or some other SFC games when you’re in invincible mode.
Consequences of Physical Full Burst intrigues me. She’s moving very slowly, but her thought process is supposedly accelerated 1,000 times faster. What this means, is that her body is moving a thousand times faster than what we see on screen.
I remember watching this ancient X-Files episode where this guy could slow down time, but he had to keep stealing shoes because they keep getting burned away by friction. When she pushed Haru, it must have been like getting hit by a bullet lol
Also, how would her body handle the stress? How would the brain accept 1,000 times more heart rate? I guess they added such a high requirement so that the best players (brains that can handle it) can ever use it, and hard to reuse it again so it doesn’t leave permanent brain damage.

I could not find this theory, but if someone does, please post a link.
I guess it makes sense to some degree, but then again, it feels like time passes really fast when you’re having fun, so I’m not too sure about all this.
Okay, I have to say, I really liked these lines.
Nanomachines in the future apparently not only fix tissue, but also seems to inject protein to stimulate growth and recovery of dead cells?
This is just scary. It makes modern technology available for us today look like toys.
I was wondering why he looked so natural in that blanket.
Is it just me, or was he wearing the same thing for the OP in the desert?
Protip: You should return things you borrowed from a hospital.
He’s so damn evil. Holy crap, even Haru looks mad evil.
I’m sure our Porky-kun and his 400 APM has made it.
And they say games are waste of time. Proven them wrong!
I wasn’t very convinced by the character development between Snow Black and Haru.
On the other hand, story pacing is very good, and they have proven their ability to execute crucial scenes very well.
Episode rating: 7.5/10

Pretty much agree with the character development between SBH and Haru not being very convincing and the confession scene felt quite forced. When I first read it in the manga, I was like “Fo real?”. But I guess that’s youth. Lol.
Epic cliffhanger means epic fight! Can’t wait for next week’s episode. Been waiting for this fight.
Posted by EPC | April 28, 2012, 3:19 amFew things can force a confession like the prospects of grievous bodily harm by way of errant automobile.
IOW, I wanted to tell you this when we both were at the flowers and chocolate phrase, but since this car is going to smoosh us, I freaking love you Porky-kun.
For an action series: par for the course.

Posted by 8thSin | April 28, 2012, 9:26 am>I wasn’t very convinced by the character development between Snow Black and Haru
I believe the most common explanation for this in the novel (as I have yet to watch this episode) was that she had been “playing” this game to the max yet she can’t beat it, and comes this guy who she has every reason to believe that can surpass her, but he happens to be a totally useless guy.
Kawahara’s running theme in his novel is that game is more than “just a game”. Given you can accept this premise completely, it would be more accurate to say base on her mental age, the talent she sees in him is far more than anyone else (the gap between level 8 and 9 is just too big).
Admiration combining with sympathy is probably what driven to her to confess. She probably isn’t really in love with him at this point (yet I wouldn’t rule this out, Kawahara isn’t really good with writing about love), but more just she really wants him to improve. The dichotomy of seeing someone at such a high potential but yet low self-esteem can be quite painfully moving.
The person at his/her peak is often the loneliest, just when you found someone who you think might be able to walk with you that person doesn’t believe your trust is something I can believe.
Maybe the anime screwed up somewhere? Oh well, thanks for the episode anyhow.
Posted by Kunagisa | April 28, 2012, 3:51 amI guess I didn’t really connect with Snow Black when the declaration was made. Those are all legitimate points, but they came across somewhat forced in anime IMO. Maybe I would’ve understood the characters better if I read LN first ^^;
Posted by 8thSin | April 28, 2012, 9:34 amI agree with it being forced, but I don’t really have any problem with the declaration itself. It seems to be delivered in a manner consistent with her character, and she is stating something, using the graveness of the situation to convey both how serious she is about what she’s saying, and it’s truthfulness. It might also be that she’s expressing feelings short of romantic love. The words she uses are open to interpretation, and while I don’t disagree with the translation or that she is confessing, you have to keep in mind she’s a serious, formal person and she’s just gently conveying her feelings in what may be her last moments alive to Haru, rather than confessing with the expectation that more will happen or that she’ll even survive.
That part is fine, what sucks is the melodrama of the bizarre car-flying-through-the air at them to set that up. Okay, sure, they’re probably electric cars and they might be light enough that they will fly though the air for a good bit if they hit something at really high speed. But I think there really could have been more thought put into the situation to make it actually inescapable. I too agree, two gamers with fast reflexes would have been out of the way of that thing, along with the other people in the scene.
Posted by A.Crush | April 29, 2012, 5:48 pmoh, a bit of theory if no one minds…..(hope you don’t)
>human consciousness related to heart-rate.
NOt its “adrenaline”/epinephrine that alters perception of time (your reaction speed) heart rate inc. is just a by-product of pumpin more blood into your brain
i laughed my ass of @ the 1000x heart rate dialogue…literally a way to “brain-burst” -__-
besides good development
otsukare-sama! 8thsin ((((-___-)/
Posted by light0 | April 28, 2012, 4:41 amOh, right. If they had “adrenaline” for that line, it would’ve made total sense.
I guess setting up a memorable line > science in anime :3
Maybe it’s possible to find a theory that says adrenaline is caused by increased heart rate somewhere though.
Posted by 8thSin | April 28, 2012, 9:46 am8thsin, do take it in the right spirit please
, not that I want the anime I watch to turn into biology 1,
Adrenaline is just the back story
But yes knowing that its physically impossible for you to survive beyond a few seconds if your heart rate inc. 1000 fold is also necessary IMO
well to each his own isn’t that right?
Posted by light0 | April 28, 2012, 1:28 pmNo, i meant the author changed “adrenaline” to “heart rate” to set up for the line ^^;
It didn’t occur me that line would’ve made more sense with “adrenaline” instead of what the character said.
Posted by 8thSin | April 28, 2012, 1:32 pmah!! finally I get it
it seems that I mistook what you said in you last post leading to this confusion on my side, and thus the other post which sounds rather rude, on a re-read -__- (lawl)
but anyway great work joining up with UTW, i heard from Kusion how much work you and Raze are doing, good work subbing Accel World, TOxA and Fate/Zero
Posted by light0 | April 28, 2012, 1:48 pmI recall reading that 1 minute in real-time is equal to 17 minutes when accelerated. Divided further, 1 second in real-time would equal 17 seconds when acceled. That would mean she would of had about 50 acceled seconds at max before her body would be torn to shreads from the inside.
Posted by Ash | June 23, 2012, 9:47 amoh btw, not to sound prophetic or all knowing
there is no such way to prove that heart rate inc is uniquely caused by adrenaline, though the opposite of this statement is always true
TL;DR:
ADRENALINE ≡ heart rate increase
heart rate inc ≠ ADRENALINE.
(again, i DON’T(never have) suggest that the subs should have said “adrenaline” nor do i want anyone interpreting it that way)
Posted by light0 | April 28, 2012, 1:38 pmIn some sense, the anime makes some sense. Your nervous system causes adrenaline to be released which stimulates and increases your heart rate. More blood is being pumped to the brain, causing a heightened perception.
It’s like when you played dodge ball as a kid, when you barely dodge a ball hurling at your face, you get this “matrix” like feeling. That’s just your body releasing adrenaline and getting blood to the right places really quickly — to get that spontaneous action.
Well that’s all I remember from 2 years of Bio (before I switched to Finance bwhaha).
Posted by asd | April 28, 2012, 6:37 pmWay back in 1850, Helmholtz established the “lag” in the perception of time, or at least how living things perceive the real world compared to reality. Our brains apparently “see” the future a fraction of a second faster, based on experience, to make up for the lag.
My guess is the Accelerated World relies on manipulation of this ability and relativity as it applies to the perception of time.
The series doesn’t really need to explain it though, since it takes place in the future, and with the Neuro Linker tech, it’s more than possible that humans are able to take advantage of more brain function and enhanced abilities, especially with networked computational ability added to it.
The numbers and the whole heart thing is probably just for effect, I seriously doubt you could increase the heart rate 1000 times unless you were planning on having a heart attack immediately afterward.
Posted by A.Crush | April 29, 2012, 6:30 pmWhen I watch this scene I had the feeling that the explanation is a lot like how computers work and maybe that’s what the author is aiming for rather than a biological one. Saying that heart rate is the “base clock” for human thought process and increasing it will make humans able to think faster sounds very similar to how you can make your CPU process faster by overclocking it. ofc, overclocking your PC has a risk of frying it if the chip has defects which is also very similar to why only the best at thought processing (lvl 9s) are allowed to do it. However, this doesn’t explain how being able to think faster leads to an ability to accelerate a human body.
Also, I’ve heard theories of how animals with faster heart rate tends to have a shorter lifespan than slower one but since they’re animals of different species, this doesn’t meant anything at all. A quick googlle turn up this article.
http://www.diseaseproof.com/archives/healthy-food-slow-metabolism-linked-to-longevity.html
Posted by z1701Ez | April 28, 2012, 7:59 pmThis can mean something.
Different species have obviously different lifespan, but if all species ordered by lifespan also have the same order in heart rate, this can still be meaningful.

Posted by light0 | April 28, 2012, 4:42 am“Also, I think if she had at least 5,000 points or something accumulated, she could probably survive one loss after using the skill”
Just read through the novel again (as far as it is translated at least) and it says there that when a level 9 linker fights the loser will lose all remaining Burst Points, meaning that if Kuroyukihime is defeated just once she will lose ALL her Burst Points and therefore lose the Brain Burst Program.
I just trust the tranlation though because this series isn’t licenced in germany.
Anyway, thanks for the episode and keep up the good work.
Posted by Alto | April 28, 2012, 4:46 amWell either that or that was a huge misinterpretation on my part and it simply means that when a level 9 Linker defeats someone the “victim” loses all their points, making your argument completely valid.
Anyone else up for debate?
Posted by Alto | April 28, 2012, 4:57 amIn anime it said they lose all points against another Level 9 Linker. I’m not sure if they lose all points against lower level though… I think that’s a bit too harsh as a rule.
Posted by 8thSin | April 28, 2012, 9:48 amActually, it’s only the level 9 that loses all points if they lose against anyone.
Posted by burnpsy | April 28, 2012, 10:58 amI absolutely love the music in this scene. It’s sounds like a race scene in Chrono Trigger or some other SFC games when you’re in invincible mode.
And just like in games, the two problems with inv-mode are always two-fold: environmental hazards and the instant it wears off.
Stars in Mario are the most insidious environmental hazard in the game. They make you think it was entirely your fault when you die.
Posted by Artanis | April 28, 2012, 6:34 amExcellent observation
I used to die a lot from misjudging the invincible length, and her Super Sayan-like glow in Accel World may actually be invincible star effect in Mario…
Posted by 8thSin | April 28, 2012, 9:50 amI hate how they removed the fact that Snow Black’s family didn’t show up and just sent a lawyer instead.
Posted by burnpsy | April 28, 2012, 11:03 amWhy am I so damn qualified to talk details about an anime I’m not a huge fan of and have actually read none of the source material?
Quick biology points:
1) You wouldn’t be able to accelerate brain function 1000 times. Even if very small particles, it’s still a physical process of transmitters opening nerve gates, calcium going through then the transmitter being removed. The reactions already happen very, very quickly (in the millisecond time range). Accelerating it 1000 times would require reactions in the microsecond time range.
Further, accelerating the brain function that much would burn through all of brain’s store of neurotransmitters in probably less than a second. So you’d get 1 Burst Link before causing brain damage.
2) If, during the “physical full burst” she was moving at about 100x speed (so 1/10th of normal speed in Haru’s view), that could be theoretically possible. At the cost of permanent muscle damage. You’d have, at most, 2s of that type of action (the Phosphocreatine system might be able to handle those energy demands). But it’d be more of a 1-way type action. The muscle, once engaged, would shred itself from the force. So there is actually some legitimate possibilities, though costly, with that.
3) Nanobots repairing some tissue directly and delivering specific rebuilding tissue would make a lot of sense. Some would be used a bit like a surgeon (so reattaching all of those muscle tissues and ligaments she just tore) and others being high affinity nutrient delivery to let the body recoup other parts, given the delicate & personalized nature of some structures.
So, that setup makes a lot of sense. Plus the medical bed being closed off and wrapped in sensors. That’s about the most accurate future-tech we’ve seen in this series.
Posted by sqa | April 28, 2012, 11:30 amA few quick story points:
-) Haru continues to be the major problem. He’s pathetic for the story’s sake not because his character is consistent. Our “I’m a pawn” guy would never have shown up to the lounge in the first place. And, no matter how self-loathing he is, if a hot girl spent time with him, he’d be attempting to validate himself with it. There would, at minimum, be a tension between the self-loathing and the validating effects.
So, still, Haru isn’t believable. That’s a huge problem. He’s like Naruto, at the beginning of that series, without any redeeming qualities or personality. It’s just hard to watch.
-) Snow Black’s infuatuation with Haru is actually realistic. I hate to say that. It should be one of those “oh, that can’t possibly happen”. I have actually seen it happen. She wasn’t Snow Black pretty, but I know a fat, crippled guy that got a really cute girl (the relationship lasted several years) through a MMO. It was also one of the greatest WTF moments in my life when I found out about it.
So, yeah, given what we know about Snow Black, it actually makes some sense. She actually, given what information we have, was verging into Stalker territory in researching Haru. Which, after watching Mirai Nikki, isn’t as scary as it used to be…
Posted by sqa | April 28, 2012, 11:44 amJust about everything in this episode really worked for me. Maybe it’s just because I’m not thinking too hard about it (hahahahaha), and I don’t know what’s coming, but I loved pretty much everything.
His “I’m just a piece for you to use and then throw away” speech made a lot of sense to me, even if he was wrong. First of all, like you said, he’s been bullied, and he was being used by Araya et al. in the first episode as a food mule. Second, he may be good at playing games, but in reality, he is pretty pathetic and unattractive. It’s natural, in his position, to suspect someone like Kuroyukihime just wants to make use of his gaming abilities and is only interacting with his “real” form to keep him working for her. Especially after what happened with Chiyu the previous day, where she admitted to going out with Taku so he and Haru could continue being friends. If one of his best friends had an ulterior motive, what’s to say this complete stranger doesn’t, too? All this combined drove him to his conclusion: that she’s just using him. And I totally bought it.
@sqa
And, no matter how self-loathing he is, if a hot girl spent time with him, he’d be attempting to validate himself with it. There would, at minimum, be a tension between the self-loathing and the validating effects.
That’s what the scene in the bathroom was. Obviously, the idea is attractive to him. See: the dream he had that morning. He likes her, and I’m sure he wants her to like him. He just can’t bring himself to accept that she does. And that’s what led to the discussion on the way home. He convinced himself of it wasn’t true, and he stuck to his guns.
Our “I’m a pawn” guy would never have shown up to the lounge in the first place.
I can see why he would. She trampled all over his high score–the one thing he really took pride in. Even knowing who it was, curiosity and admiration probably got the best of him. “Why is Miss Perfect so damn good at this game? And why does she want to see me, of all people?” Sure, he probably didn’t expect anything good from it, but it was more than likely a better alternative than getting kicked around by Araya’s crew.
I find it hard to believe two of the best gamers took so long to react, while random guy A and B to their sides already reacted and running away…
This makes a lot of sense to me, too. Having a good reaction time in a video game does not necessarily equate to having a good reaction time in real life. In a game, you’re expecting something to happen, so you’re always on guard, always on the ready. Additionally, a large part of being good at games is being good at pattern recognition. Outsmarting the AI or another player character, generally under a much more limited set of rules than reality–since it’s really hard to make a fully functional, realistic model of the world in a computer system that you can run in real time. I’m sure they’re closer to being able to in their world, but I’m also pretty sure they’d still be making approximations and simplifications for the sake of time/money/effort. There’s also a limited set of actions you can perform in a game, as compared to reality. In these conditions, it’s much easier to find and react to the patterns regulating enemy/world behavior, whereas the real world is so much more complicated.
They’ve probably walked that route dozens, if not hundreds of times without incident. They let their guard down, and Kuroyukihime even admits after they accelerate that it was a mistake for her to have not seen this coming. On top of that, they were in the middle of fight when it happened. They were both very emotional at the time, so their minds were in absolutely the wrong place. It takes time to switch gears like that, and even if they had been able to, they were physically connected by the cable. There’s no guarantee they could have even reacted both fast enough and synchronized well enough to get out of the way.
Plus, random guy A and B were farther away from the car’s target, so they didn’t have to move as far.
I have to say, this development went way too fast for my tastes.
What Kunagisa said here pretty much sums up what I wanted to say about this. I like the idea that she might not actually be “in love” with him at this point. Kuroyukihime herself said that she only even realized she had feelings for him that morning, when she was being jealous of Chiyu. Given the circumstances, she knows she’s not likely to make it out alive, and she makes a snap judgment. She’d rather embrace these unfamiliar feelings while she still has the chance than risk dying without saying anything. I absolutely buy that.
Plus, the presentation of that whole scene was done so well. The music, the pacing, the sense of tension. Those damn lines, and their delivery, as she’s getting ready to push Haru out of the way. It all came together so well for me, resulting in an unbelievably emotional and tense second half. I was almost cheering as Haru pounded through those menus at the end. I was that into it, which–I must admit–very rarely happens.
In the end, I can forgive some wacky science. I’ll be damned if “accelerating” like that actually makes any sense to me, but, for me, that falls nicely under suspension of disbelief, so I’m more than willing to accept the (likely) physical impossibility of it in exchange for some powerful, moving drama.
Posted by BDH | April 28, 2012, 1:46 pmI, oddly enough, actually didn’t have a problem with the confession. Staring death in the face and she’s obviously showing a jealousy streak about Haru’s actions, it makes some sense.
And, as I’ve said else where, I actually know of a similar type of relationship, where the guy was actually in much worse (physical) shape. (Though much better mental shape) So, I can believe it. What I really can’t shift is Haru. That level of self-loathing is something else. Which is why he wouldn’t have shown up to the lounge without Rage on his mind. His path was either Monster Rage or Hikikomori. Those where the only real options. Timid approach after building “just enough” courage wasn’t really on the plate.
Haru is really one of those situations where specific actions are believable but the entire collection of them aren’t from the same person. Which is why they serve the plot and not the character. Or Haru is suicidal and this entire series is going to end very differently than expected!
Posted by sqa | April 29, 2012, 3:03 amI think I have less of an issue accepting Haru because I knew, and dated, a girl in high school who was very much like him–personality-wise. She was paranoid, insecure, and even accused me of using her (much the same way Haru did to Kuroyukihime) on several occasions. She had an intense inferiority complex, and she refused to believe I actually liked her for the majority of the 18 months we were together. In some ways, she was not as bad as Haru, and in others, she was much, much worse.
In any event, I don’t have to make much of a jump to go from someone I knew in reality to Haru, so I find his character to be fairly realistic–if abnormal.
Posted by BDH | April 29, 2012, 4:44 amLet me expand a bit on my problem with Haru, which is what causes the most problem with the character interactions.
Haru being self-loathing isn’t the problem (though it’s not exactly a compelling character). The problem is something that comes up a lot (and is generally what leads to Plot Holes): there is something in life called “Path Dependency”. Or, “how you got there is the path you took”.
If we call Haru’s major actions A, B, C, D and E (through the first 4 episodes), we have a situation where any 1 of those 5 is believable. The issue becomes that the “person” that would make choices A, C and D simply wouldn’t make choices B and E. That’s the problem and the character holes.
So, while we have some believable reactions, even Haru’s self-loathing in episodes 3 & 4, this self-loathing character NEVER shows up to that lounge. He’d have gone the full hikikomori, or, if he showed up at the lounge, he’d have had murder on his mind. For a character that doesn’t want to be seen by others, only the most intense of emotions could have driven him to step foot into that lounge. Given his emotional palette, it would be Rage or nothing else.
I hate to keep harping on the Lounge scene, but it’s the biggest problem this series has. I can actually handle Eps 3 & 4 better than I can handle 1 & 2. It also doesn’t help that Haru shows zero signs, at this point, of someone capable of mastering a game. We’ve been shown he can move quickly in the Racquetball-like game, but his personality also hasn’t shown any signs of the aptitude to master something. Time spent on something is not mastery, just a chance for basic skill.
Still, I hope this series can move past this set of problems and get good. It’s supposed to get better, from what others says. We’ll see.
Posted by sqa | April 29, 2012, 2:40 pmI can certainly understand where you’re coming from. I guess it just doesn’t feel like that big of a problem to me. I suppose we’ll just have to see where it goes from here.
Posted by BDH | April 29, 2012, 3:27 pmI do want to be clear that we’re not talking “Second Half of Guilty Crown” bad for random character actions. It’s just that Haru is bouncing between two different type of people that are similar but not the same. These aren’t really left-field reactions.
So, it’s been distracting, but if he can progress out of “self-loathing loser” mode (and quickly), the series can still be enjoyable. But if he gets stuck there, there’s not going to be a lot to recommend for this series.
Posted by sqa | April 29, 2012, 7:33 pmI fully expect slow reaction from Haru because he’s practically a newb at the whole thing, but Snow Black must have run into a bunch of situations where she had to use Burst Link. It should be the first thing she mutters out whenever something unexpected happens… an automatic reaction to her by now.
The fact that those guys reacted and even their body reacted before either of them just had to say “Burst Link” is not very believable to me.
I absolutely loved the presentation in the end too. Everything after the kiss was pretty awesome
I’m sure I can tolerate this series no matter how corny the story gets if they can keep executing these scenes so well.
Posted by 8thSin | April 29, 2012, 8:16 amFair enough. I still think Kuroyukihime would be a little off her game, given Haru practically jumped her with the whole pawn thing, and she’s experiencing feelings she’s never had before. There’s also the issue of them having to do it at the exact same time, which–thinking about it–has to be pretty damn hard. So, hmm. A combination of the tension from their fight and Kuroyukihime synchronizing her call with Haru’s? Or just an animation screw-up, as suggested by nadeko26?
All things considered, it’s probably the latter, and I’m just over-analyzing to justify something that didn’t bother me but did you.

Posted by asd | April 28, 2012, 6:19 pmAlso, how would her body handle the stress? How would the brain accept 1,000 times more heart rate?
Watching the episode, it looks like the car misses them and Snow Black’s injuries are due to the stress from using Physical Full Burst causing her heart to explode.

Posted by sqa | April 29, 2012, 2:48 amYeah, but the underlying concept is the same.
He was able to select that fast due to gaming, and whether they track it or not, his APM is obviously high, just as any half-decent action game player would be.
Posted by 8thSin | April 29, 2012, 8:27 amActually saw something a while back considering the perception of time. As I recall, their experiments seemed to indicate that the people did not actually experience time at a slower rate; instead, the recollection of that experience simply seemed like time slowed down in hindsight.
Also, you mentioned this in a previous post, but I think the idea of having the computers help in thought process during the bursts is somewhat plausible. It’s hard to say since we know so little about how the brain actually works in a computational way.

Posted by nadeko26 | April 29, 2012, 6:52 amIt’s annoying, but you just sort of have to accept the whiny-Shinji male protagonist character type when you read manga or watch anime. I can only guess that the authors either personally relate to these types of people, or they’ve been influenced by their prior use and so they give their characters the same personality in order to appeal to such people who they think will eat up the material.
The episode did feel rushed, but I haven’t read the manga, so maybe it was just a whole lot of plot gone though in the short amount of time.
Anyways, my only nitpick would be that Snow Black only used Physical Full Bust in a self-sacrificing way when it probably wasn’t necessary. I mean, couldn’t she have moved to the other side of Haru, then pulled him to safety, saving herself as well? I suppose it’s possible to say maybe it took all she had just to move her upper body that bit to position herself to push Haru out of the way, but we’ll have to see what later uses of Physical Full Burst, if any, reveal about it’s limits.
It’s just a shame, since the story seems so good in some ways, but has these forced melodramatic moments. Hopefully it gets better later on and not worse.
Posted by A.Crush | April 29, 2012, 5:11 pmSo I was wondering why I found Haruyuki so annoying, then I looked up his voice actor and realized it was the same guy that did Shuu in Guilty Crown. Now everything makes sense. (〜 ̄△ ̄)〜

For the heart-thought thing. It was proven that heart is entangled in nerve-memory tissues. What’s more, if you transplant the heart, the recipient have a high chance of gaining the features of donor. I watched some TV document about this – after normal wife got the heart of the american football fan she started to like beer( she was an abstinent) and swear a lot – just like the dead donor. There were even cases when the memories were transferred like this. One guy got a new heart and after he woke up he remember his youth in Spain…. Although he was born in Germany and never got outside his country. There was even a woman who could speak some Italian words after operation and as she was reading the Italian newspaper she accidentally found she “remembered” how to speak Italian. She was an American and she got the heart from the Italian immigrant. It just came to my mind after watching this episode and thinking about this “accelerated heart” thing.
But returning to the topic:
I must agree that the accident scene was a little strange. I don’t think she got hurt so much by the car but by the fact that her accelerated muscles literally turned into shreds.
The love confession scene was ok for me – you know, without BB they would be dead and stuff. Danger gets people closer.
I had an accident too and I also would want some AI in my car. And glasses that would tell the names of the people I am meeting. It’s strange how I can function with only making sentences that don’t use or indicate the usage of the names…
I liked how he was sitting there with his blanket like in the op. I understand him a little – he is confused between acknowledging that he is “loved” and this “pawn” stuff he wanted to be. And now he feels guilty about not being good enough at game( remember 1st episode – games are the only thing he is good at) so he couldn’t use Body Acceleration and save the person who gave him some purpose in life, changed him, stopped his nightmare of being bullied. She is simultaneously so close and so far from him – the lover and “master”/parent. He wants to pay for what she’s done to him so he is guarding her( and you know – this whole “9lvl loose all points” law). But he kinda failed at protecting her. Were I him I would accelerate the instant someone young-looking went in. And not just wait as the evil-looking evil-grinning friend went in. But it may as well be my point of view since I just knew that Taku and not Chiyu was the Cyan Pile.
I loved the cliffhanger and can’t wait to see MC without his arm like in the op. Will his win( quite obvious) wake up the sleeping beauty? Will he try to crawl to her with his messed up body and she will miraculously wake up and kiss/thank him? Ahh! I want to know so badly and the LN vol.1 isn’t translated fully!
Thank God that Highschool DxD translation is going quite smoothly!
Posted by BananowyJE | April 29, 2012, 6:15 pmI was thinking about this adrenaline speed-up thing and stuff when I was driving. And I noticed that even thought I was going ~120km/h the world around me appeared like I was driving 40-50km/h. Strange and fascinating at the same time.
Posted by BananowyJE | April 30, 2012, 2:45 pmAre you going to update the accel world sub review soon?
and hohoho, look at commie’s hyouka subs this week. fail
Posted by sad | April 29, 2012, 7:03 pmWouldn’t Brain Burst be noticed? Each activation should be accompanied by a massive CPU draw. The global net might not notice it, but local nets like the school and hospital should, since they are smaller, presumably with less resources.
Posted by Artanis | April 29, 2012, 7:38 pmYeah, that’s a concern, but are they actually accessing school’s server other than initial frame freezing by social cameras?
I thought CPU draw would come from their Neuro Linker for accelerated thought process. Of course, they need the network to fight each other or something, but that’s in LAN, right?
Posted by 8thSin | April 30, 2012, 3:19 pmI swear if they take out Kuroyukihime this show is so dropped T_T
That’s more than just an inferiority complex, Haru’s depressed. Not that I can blame him. But that’s some serious depression.
I was thinking the same things when Kuroyukihime did the physical acceleration. That could really cause problems. If you collided with anything, both you and the thing you collided with would be severely damaged. Accelerating your heartbeat is also extraordinarily dangerous, though I suppose even more dangerous is accelerating your brain without accelerating your heart. I feel like brain functions would have trouble without a constant flow of fresh oxygen delivered via bloodstream. But I think by now I’m way overthinking it :p
Posted by Nazarielle | April 29, 2012, 8:30 pmI think it’s far more likely that Brain Burst has made a local image of the user’s consciousness in the neuro linker. The brain never really accelerates, Brain Burst grabs the local environment, and kicks the image into high gear. Afterwards, the user’s memory is updated.
Physical Full Burst, then, is the neuro linker controlling the body. Notice that accelerated movements seem to be robotic and overcorrected.
The neuro linker has to be installed at birth, which suggests that it does something that enables the program to function. Most likely this is the user being comfortable with both externalized and augmented memories, allowing the program to both build the image of the user and update memories.
Any description to the contrary is a misunderstanding on the user’s part. They have the result, and they made a (wrong) guess as to how it worked.
Posted by Artanis | April 30, 2012, 5:28 pmIt makes a lot more sense if her injuries are only from the Physical Full Burst, but the whole confession thing still seems sudden. I get that she did it because she didn’t expect to survive. She’ll be fine though, or at least she’ll be fine enough to appear in Brain Burst, obviously she has to fight alongside the other main characters. It’ll be interesting to see whether or not she winds up back to normal, or there is some sort of twist where she is in a coma or bedridden and from them on only interacts with others in the virtual world.
Posted by A.Crush | April 30, 2012, 12:52 amAlso, I find it hard to believe two of the best gamers took so long to react, while random guy A and B to their sides already reacted and running away… Sigh.
I thought the point was they were engrossed in their conversation and didn’t notice what was happening around them until it was too late.
Google Goggles for human beings. I could really use this because I forget people’s names a lot.
There’s probably a legal requirement when you record someone to send a notification to their neuro linker.
That scene reminded me of Utena’s kashira girls.
Now that we’ve seen what Cyan Pile looks like, I know why he’s called that. His weapon is a pile-driver. And watching the OP for clues, I think Black Lotus is the black-and-purple fighter near the end.
